A grassroots success story is unfolding on the courts, with the BK Owls girls’ basketball program recording remarkable growth and cementing its place as one of the organisation’s proudest achievements.
From humble beginnings in Season 1, where just seven teams and 54 players took part, the program has expanded to 12 teams and 95 players by Season 6 a staggering 76 per cent increase in participation.
The steady rise reflects not only increased interest in girls’ basketball, but also the strength of development pathways and coaching within the program.
The numbers tell a compelling story.
After an early jump to 10 teams in Season 2, participation has remained strong, with consistent player numbers and a peak of 95 athletes in the most recent season. Girls now make up as much as 28 per cent of the BK Owls’ total playing group, highlighting a shift toward greater inclusivity and opportunity.
One of the standout success stories has been the G10 age group.
In just a few seasons, it has grown from a single team of six players into a thriving group of three teams and 22 athletes. Coaches Cass Parker and Rachel Wykes have played a key role in this rise, guiding their teams to consistent championship success while also developing multiple Most Valuable Players.
At the grassroots level, Jessica McDowell White has been instrumental in building the foundations of the program through her work with the Under 8s girls.
Her efforts have helped introduce young athletes to the game, creating a strong entry point and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the program.
Growth has also been evident in the G12 division, which has expanded from one to three teams, while the introduction of G18 and G23 competitions in recent seasons has provided a clear and structured pathway for female athletes to progress through the ranks.
What began as a small initiative has evolved into a thriving community, empowering young female athletes and setting a benchmark for growth in local sport.
