A community-driven sports initiative is making a powerful impact across Brisbane schools, with standout success at Bellbird Park State High School.
The Community Sports Mentoring and Coaching (CSMC) program, linked with Brian Kerle Basketball, is designed to build confidence, teamwork, and leadership through sport while providing meaningful pathways for young people.
At Bellbird Park, the program has experienced remarkable growth in just eight weeks—expanding from an initial group of 12 students to 26 by the end of the term, reflecting strong engagement and word-of-mouth support among students.
A Led by dedicated coaches Darcy Ryder, Harry Armstrong, and Tamuri Wigness, the sessions focus not only on developing basketball skills but also on fostering discipline, resilience, and leadership qualities.
The program has successfully brought together students of both genders and from a wide range of cultural and social backgrounds, creating an inclusive environment where diversity is embraced and every participant feels valued.
The program is also building on proven success stories. Former Bellbird Park student Eddie Idris, who began his journey through CSMC, has gone on to thrive within the Brian Kerle Basketball academy.
Eddie has not only elevated his performance on the basketball court through high-level training and competition, but has also demonstrated strong commitment to his education by successfully completing his Diploma of Sport. His journey highlights the program’s ability to create real pathways, combining athletic development with academic and career opportunities.
With its continued expansion across Brisbane, the CSMC program is proving to be more than just a school-based sports initiative. It is a growing community movement—one that is empowering young people, strengthening connections, and opening doors to future success both within sport and beyond.
